PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – (7/17/18) A night out, party vibes, black lights, and glowing… axes? The newest party spot in Pittsburgh isn’t a dance club or bar; it’s competitive axe-throwing venue LumberjAxes, which is introducing Cosmic Axes every other Sunday between 6 and 9 p.m. beginning Sunday, July 29 at its flagship location in Millvale. Think of them like popular “cosmic bowling” nights, but with an edge. Meanwhile, the business is also expanding, with a new location set to open in Mt. Lebanon.
Competitive axe-throwing is a fast-growing trend in the U.S. and Canada. Opened last year, LumberjAxes was Pittsburgh’s first axe-throwing venue and remains the largest in the region – its 7,500-square-foot warehouse space in Millvale is outfitted with 20 throwing lanes. Located right next to Grist House Craft Brewery, the venue is BYOB, walkable from Lawrenceville and easily accessible from the North Hills and all corners of the city.
While axe-throwing may seem like an extreme way to have a good time, LumberjAxes, a member of the National Axe-Throwing Federation, adheres to rigorous safety regulations and creates a fun, welcoming atmosphere for adults of all experience levels, from old hands to newbies encountering their inner lumberjacks for the first time. Just gather some friends, book a lane and come as you are – LumberjAxes will provide all the axes you can throw, along with experts to instruct on proper technique and safety.
On Cosmic Axes nights, the format is the same, but the rustic warehouse is transformed with black lights, fluorescent targets, and fluorescent wraps on the axe-handles
Visitors are encouraged to wear white, so they can glow too.
To book a lane for Cosmic Axes (Every other Sunday between 6 and 9 p.m.), groups must include at least six people. All participants must be at least 13 years old. Those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost for group sessions is $35 per person for a 2.5 hour block; throwers can book in advance on the website. The space will accommodate up to 100 people for parties and corporate events.
“We wanted to create an alternative to the typical party night,” says LumberjAxes founder Corey Deasy, who also founded the region’s first escape-room business. “We’re proud to have introduced axe-throwing to Pittsburgh, but we’re not going to stop there. We’re always thinking of new ways to enhance the experience. And we know Pittsburghers will be game to try whatever we dream up.”
In fact, Pittsburgh residents have been so enthusiastic about this new entertainment option that LumberjAxes has decided to open a second location in Mt. Lebanon. With 12 lanes, it will be the second-largest axe-throwing facility in the Pittsburgh market, behind the Millvale location. The South Hills venue will include a corporate meeting room for special events and will eventually incorporate Cosmic Axes. The location is LumberjAxes’ third facility; the company opened an axe-throwing venue in the Phoenix/Tempe area last year.
